What is Balayage?

Balayage, derived from the French word "to sweep," has completely changed the world of hair coloring with its hand-painted highlights, delivering a natural and sun-kissed aesthetic. Unlike traditional foil methods from years past, Balayage brings incredible versatility and can truly be customized for the individual client and their needs.

Although Balayage has been around for decades, it has become more widely known with the desire for more low-maintenance haircolor. This personalized technique creates a multi-dimensional effect because you are painting the surface of the hair and control how much or how little the hair is saturated, resulting in various tones throughout the hair, much like we all had when we were children. The soft application toward the root also allows for a very subtle line of demarcation, offering an incredibly graceful grow-out, lending itself to longer time between appointments.

Are Balayage and Ombre the same thing? This is a common misconception and easy to understand how they can be confused. However, the easiest way to describe it is Balayage is a technique (the sweeping of color onto the hair) and Ombre (meaning transition of color along a medium) is a finish or result.

Is balayage right for you?? If you’re looking for low-maintenance lightening of your hair, balayage would be perfect! However, if you’re looking for a significantly lighter hair, foil highlights or “foilyage” may be best for you. Questions? Book a consultation and we’ll answer any questions you may have!
